Vehicle registration may be cancelled at any time. To avoid insurance suspension fines, you must cancel your registration before cancelling your vehicle’s insurance.
Registration cancellation is required if the vehicle is:
- Sold or traded
- Registered in another state
- Repossessed, wrecked, or salvaged by an insurance company,
- Rendered inoperable, stored, or parked for an extended period of time
How to Cancel Registration
Submit an Application of Voluntary Registration Cancellation (MV-18J) signed by the primary owner, with a copy of the primary owner’s valid Georgia driver’s license or Georgia ID card.
How to Reactivate Registration
Most vehicle registrations may be reactivated at any time, as long as the insurance is active in the Georgia Electronic Insurance Compliance System (GEICS), and any outstanding ad valorem taxes and fees have been paid.
There are 7 ways to cancel or request reactivation:

To cancel your registration with assistance from the Tag Office, please prepare an Application of Voluntary Registration Cancellation (MV-18J) signed by the primary owner. Please provide a copy of the primary owner’s valid Georgia driver’s license, Georgia ID card, or letter ID#, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or tag number.
To reactivate your registration with assistance from the Tag Office, please ensure that your insurance is active in GEICS, and any outstanding ad valorem taxes and fees are paid. Please provide a copy of the primary owner’s valid Georgia driver’s license, Georgia ID card, or letter ID#, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or tag number.
